The demands on us at work, school, and home can be never-ending and overwhelming. Despite struggling, many people are hesitant to ask for help. We want to avoid being a nuisance.
Several weeks back, a neighbor saw that our home's siding on the second floor was falling out. They were kind enough to lend us an extension ladder to deal with the flapping.
Yet, I could not figure out how to use the extension ladder for the life of me. So I had a choice – should I ask for help from my neighbor, or should I continue to wrestle with the ladder?
The fascinating thing is that despite us making a big deal about asking for help – others are often more than happy to help. And, research shows that helping others promotes greater well-being for the helper. Asking for help can be an opportunity to enable someone else to experience positivity when they extend a hand.
Thinking about this, I decided that I should go ahead and text for help.
My handy neighbor was more than happy to come to my aid and share a gentle correction. I had the extension ladder placed upside down! In less than a moment, he got it up in a jiffy and pounded the unruly siding in.
I learned several things that day: ladders, kindness, and what a wonderful neighbor I have. But perhaps the most significant is that I should ask for help when I need it.
