Experimental Study of Particulate Flows Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Research Program Summer 2025 Closed Particulate Flows and Particle Technology In this summer research project, an undergraduate student will collaborate on an industry-sponsored research project to analyze the flow of particles discharging through a hopper. The researcher will be responsible for characterizing the granular media, performing experiments using a laboratory scale hopper, and using particle image and particle tracking velocimetry to measure flow properties. The flow properties of interest include the velocity field, discharge rate, shear band formation, and the free surface profile. The experimental data will then be used to validate computational models for different granular media and test conditions. Aaron B Morris The work will involve the design of experiments, characterizing granular media, and analyzing the flow behavior in a discharging hopper. In addition to performing experiments and analyzing the data, the student will be responsible for presenting their research to the project team.
