Green Week poster competition open to students, faculty, the community
Purdue is holding an open competition for research posters on Sept. 18 as part of its Green Week celebration. The Energy Center, Center for the Environment and Climate Change Research Center are co-sponsoring the competition as part of a Discovery Park Green Week program. The program spans two days and includes a panel discussion and open forum to discuss current issues in climate, the environment and energy technology. More

Fuel-saving designs improve efficiency of hydraulic systems

Researchers at Purdue have shown how to reduce fuel consumption and dramatically improve the efficiency of hydraulic pumps and motors in heavy construction equipment. The new designs incorporate two innovations: They eliminate valves now needed to direct the flow of hydraulic fluid in heavy equipment, and they also might incorporate textured "microstructured" surfaces inside pumps to improve performance. Lecture will discuss tradition of Black Mardi Gras Indians

The historical significance, performances and cultural expressions of New Orleans' colorful Black Mardi Gras Indians will be discussed during a lecture Sept. 24 at Fowler Hall. Joyce Marie Jackson, an associate professor of geography and anthropology at Louisiana State University, will speak at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Jackson will examine historical incidents, street theatrics, suit design, and musical and dance practices via observations and ethnographic interviews. Jackson will explore how those traditions emerged and persisted through the years against the New Orleans political power structure. More
Cirque Mechanics to bring theatrical circus show to Elliott Hall stage
Blending dance, acrobatics and theatre, Birdhouse Factory by Cirque Mechanics will bring its cast of dancers, contortionists, trapeze arts, unicyclists and comedic characters to Elliott Hall of Music at 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. More
