Purdue mourns alumnus Eugene CernanEugene Cernan, the most recent person to walk on the moon and a Purdue alumnus, died Monday (Jan. 16). Cernan earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Purdue in 1956 and received an honorary doctorate in engineering in 1970. He was one of 14 astronauts chosen by NASA in October 1963. Cernan was commander of Apollo 17, which blasted off from Kennedy Space Center on Dec. 7, 1972. The lunar module touched down on the moon on Dec. 11.
