Harry Belafonte to speak today at Purdue Martin Luther King Jr. celebration

Harry Belafonte, singer, songwriter, actor and social activist, will keynote the Purdue celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 7 p.m. today (Jan. 17) in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. The theme of the 2017 celebration is "The Fierce Urgency of Now: Where Do We Go from Here?"

Eugene Cernan

Purdue mourns alumnus Eugene Cernan

Eugene Cernan, the most recent person to walk on the moon and a Purdue alumnus, died Monday (Jan. 16). Cernan earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Purdue in 1956 and received an honorary doctorate in engineering in 1970. He was one of 14 astronauts chosen by NASA in October 1963. Cernan was commander of Apollo 17, which blasted off from Kennedy Space Center on Dec. 7, 1972. The lunar module touched down on the moon on Dec. 11.
