Purdue scientist Briony Horgan is leading NASA’s Mars rover into unfamiliar territory as the mission turns toward its next opportunity to find ancient signs of life on the red planet. The rover Perseverance is searching for evidence of ancient microbial life in Mars’ rock record in deposits along the margin areas around Jezero Crater, where the rover initially landed. Any life that once existed on the red planet may have left behind chemical clues that Horgan hopes can still be found in the deposits as part of the rover’s “margin campaign.”
Purdue is collaborating with three other institutions to build the foundation for space operations to, from and throughout the Earth and moon neighborhood with the Characterizing Highways and Automated Navigation in Cislunar Environment project.
Ian Hyatt, vice president for information technology and CIO, was recognized by the Indianapolis Business Journal as a Tech Exec of the Year in the not-for-profit category. The award honors those in executive-level technology positions who play vital roles in making Indianapolis-area businesses, institutions and nonprofit groups successful. He also recently earned recognition as a member of The Wall Street Journal CIO Network, and Education Technology Insights magazine named Hyatt among the Top 10 Education CIOs for 2023.
Purdue and Trimble are establishing the state-of-the-art Trimble Technology Lab at Purdue, focused on teaching and research for construction management technology. The lab is hosted by the School of Construction Management Technology within the Purdue Polytechnic Institute and will bring Trimble’s industry-leading construction technologies into a dedicated learning environment for Purdue students to learn and innovate.
