A team of researchers, led by Purdue University biochemistry associate professor Jennifer Wisecaver, has identified the hidden genetic makeup of a microscopic organism that causes toxic algal blooms in at least two dozen states. Their research on the Prymnesium parvum organism was recently published in Current Biology and could potentially help predict when the ecosystem-disrupting blooms will occur.
