The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.1 million grant to Purdue’s Gyeong Mee Yoon to research how plants acclimate to environmental stress. Her findings could have implications for food security in an era of climate change. Yoon, an associate professor of botany and plant pathology, is probing two different biochemical pathways that plants use to improve their response to stresses such as drought, severe heat and cold.
Purdue civil engineering researchers have developed patent-pending intelligent architected materials that can dissipate energy caused by bending, compression, torque and tensile stresses, avoiding permanent plastic deformation or damage, and may also exhibit shape memory properties that allow them to have actuation capacity.
For a total of 40 days over the next two years, Joe Jewell, the John Bogdanoff Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, will join an exclusive group of researchers for a behind-the-curtain look into military science and technology. By accepting an invite to the competitive Defense Science Study Group, a DARPA-sponsored program run by the Institute for Defense Analyses, he will receive unique exposure to the military’s science, technology, policy and R&D needs.
Purdue’s Engineering Projects in Community Service program, an engineering-based design course centered around hands-on learning, professional development and community engagement, is expected to expand as students at Purdue University in Indianapolis — Purdue’s first comprehensive urban campus — join the program. EPICS currently has eight community partners within greater Indianapolis.
Missy Gulick (Student Life) is an amazing asset to all of Student Life. She was instrumental in planning the 2023 Fall Family Weekend. From coordinating meals with the caterer to envisioning the family fun zone and reaching out to some of the amazing student-athletes on campus to be available for autograph sessions, she's an absolute rock star. It was so nice seeing families enjoying themselves in the Black & Gold Gyms with all of the different games and photo opportunities. Thank you, Missy, for all you do! — Jen Wetli (Parent & Family Connections)
