Purdue's Board of Trustees endorsed President Mung Chiang’s request for a 13th consecutive tuition freeze, meaning students will see no increase in tuition through at least the 2025-26 academic year. The freeze — to be formally approved by trustees in late spring 2025, after the legislative budget setting — means base undergraduate tuition will remain at $9,992 per year for Indiana residents and $28,794 for out-of-state students through 2025-26.
Purdue University and Surf Air Mobility Inc. have agreed to begin scheduled commuter air service between West Lafayette/Purdue University Airport (LAF) and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) with a target start date in early second quarter 2024. This marks the return of commercial air service for the first time since 2004 to LAF, Indiana’s second-busiest airport in terms of total annual aircraft operations.
The Purdue Board of Trustees ratified the appointment of Kenneth C. “Chris” Holford as chancellor of Purdue University Northwest, effective Jan. 8. Holford has served since May 2020 as PNW’s provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs.
To accommodate student enrollment growth across the university and strategic initiatives in the Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business, Purdue trustees gave approval today to plan, finance, construct and award construction contracts for an approximately 164,000-square-foot building near the intersection of Mitch Daniels Boulevard and Sheetz Street on the West Lafayette campus.
Purdue's Board of Trustees ratified faculty and staff appointments, awarded a posthumous degree, and approved new degree programs and resolutions of appreciation. The resolutions of appreciation were for friends of the university who recently contributed $1 million or more to Purdue.
In his report to the Board of Trustees, President Mung Chiang requested a 13th consecutive tuition freeze for the West Lafayette campus. He provided updates on the PhD student stipend evaluation, staff appreciation awards, AI in Teaching and Learning draft guidance, the campus pedestrian safety survey, and the university’s investment in student mental health. He also highlighted that, as part of the Applied Research Institute team in Indiana, Purdue secured three federal hub designations in fall 2023. Chiang announced the return of commercial airline service to Purdue University Airport, acknowledged faculty who received prestigious awards from August through November, and thanked friends of the university for their recent generous
contributions.
In his presentation to the Board of Trustees today, Jim Bullard, the Dr. Samuel R. Allen Dean of the Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business, highlighted rising rankings and enrollments for the undergraduate program. He cited key faculty hires who will boost the school’s academic prowess and the addition of former World Bank President David Malpass as a Distinguished Fellow of International Finance. Bullard spoke about several corporate partnerships that will help the school’s fundraising, student placement and experiential learning efforts. He said construction will begin next summer on a new 164,000-square-foot facility that will be student-centered, including large classroom spaces that will be open to units across
campus while creating a culture of collaboration and discovery.
In her presentation to the Board of Trustees today, Amy Reibman, the Elmore Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, provided an overview of her inventions in digital video communications and video analytics. Reibman’s work contributed to the standardization of MPEG-2 in the 1990s, which was the core component of HDTV (high-definition TV) over-the-air delivery and video DVDs. Her video analytics applications, which have been supported by Purdue and bolster precision agriculture, range from hand-washing assessment for food safety to improving feed efficiency for dairy cattle. Reibman, who has been granted 70 U.S. patents, was named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2022.
At the Purdue Global Board of Trustees meeting today (Dec. 8), Chancellor Frank Dooley reported on rates for first-term persistence, first-year retention, graduation by cohort year and credentials awarded. Dooley said 11,753 credentials (certificates, associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees) were awarded in fiscal year 2023, marking increases year over year since 2019. Dooley acknowledged the work of Provost Jon Harbor
and R. Ethan Braden, former chief marketing and communications officer, as both are moving on to new roles. He welcomed Kati Pratt, associate vice president of brand, in her role of leading Purdue Global’s marketing efforts.
