Skeletal muscle helps wrap up problem of heart failure

--In cardiomyoplasty, the latissimus dorsi muscle -- from the back -- is brought into the chest and wrapped around the heart. A specialized pacemaker is then used to help the back muscle contract with every heartbeat and, in that way, assist in pumping. The view of the heart on the left shows the skeletal muscle being brought around the heart's right ventricle to begin the wrapping procedure. The second view shows the heart entirely wrapped by the skeletal muscle. (Drawing by Pierce Goetz.)
