The Boilermaker Special VI, nicknamed the X-tra Special, will make its first official appearance during halftime of the Purdue and Ohio State University football game, said Kristy Olesky of the Purdue University Reamer Club. The Reamer Club is the student organization responsible for the maintenance of the Boilermaker Specials.
The dedication will mark the debut of the second version of the X-tra Special, a smaller version of the Boilermaker Special V, which resembles a train locomotive. The original X-tra Special was unveiled in 1979. The X-tra Special is constructed around a golf cart chassis, while the Boilermaker Special is built around a truck chassis.
The new X-tra Special was designed by Joe Penaloza, a 1994 Purdue graduate. The construction was done by students in an advanced composites class taught by Ray Thompson, associate professor of aviation technology. The new X-tra Special is patterned after the Victorian design of the Boilermaker Special V.
Companies that contributed to the construction of the new X-tra Special are: Brunswick Technology of Brunswick, Maine; Resin Services of Sterling Heights, Mich.; Decomp of Cleveland, Okla.; Diab of Desoto, Texas; Indiana Automation of Noblesville; TSD of Indianapolis; Wabash National and Pyramid Sign Design of Lafayette; ABC Metals of Logansport; and Valspar Corp. of Columbus.
