Faculty and Staff Honors:
-- George E. Kerner was named the 13th recipient of the Frederick L. Hovde Outstanding
Faculty Fellow Award. Members of Purdue's Residence Hall Council selected Kerner
for his work in the McCutcheon Hall Faculty Fellow Program. Kerner is a firefighter
and emergency medical technician with the Purdue Fire Department. The award recognizes
the work of individual Faculty Fellows. Former Purdue President Hovde implemented
the program in 1966 to give students and staff members an opportunity for out-of-class
contact. Almost 200 faculty and staff are involved in the program.
-- Purdue's Council on the Status of Women has named three Violet Haas Award winners
for 1997. The award recognizes a department, program or individual for demonstrated
efforts in promoting the advancement of women in the university. This is the first
time that all three areas have been recognized in a single year. Winners are:
- Joan L. Marshall, associate dean of the School of Liberal Arts, 1997 Violet Haas
Award for developing affirmative action initiatives in the School of Liberal Arts,
participating on advisory groups for the Spousal Relocation Assistance Program and
the University Task Force on Women's Issues, and helping to prevent sexual harassment at
the university.
- Purdue's Health Promotion Program, 1997 Violet Haas Program Award for the Eating
Disorders Awareness and Prevention Program. "Celebrating EveryBODY" was designed
to lobby for social change by celebrating the diversity of body shapes and sizes.
- Patricia A. Carlisle, director of student support services at Purdue North Central,
1997 Violet Haas Regional Campus Award for her work with the Women's Programming
Committee and the "Return to Learn" program, which targets women who are returning
to school after a long absence.

Alumni Honors:
-- Jack C. Crim of Cave Creek, Ariz.
has been named the School of Technology's 1997 Distinguished Alumnus. Crim, a member
of the Class of 1954, earned degrees in industrial technology and industrial arts
education, and he now is president and chief operating officer for Talley Industries
with headquarters in Phoenix. The company designs, manufactures and supplies specialized
industrial and commercial aerospace products and services. It was a pioneer in the
automotive air bag industry and is developing new air bag technologies. Talley Industries employs 3,500 people in 10 states.

-- Eleven outstanding graduates of Purdue's Schools of Engineering will receive Distinguished
Engineering Alumnus Awards on Friday, April 25. The awards were established in 1964
and are conferred each year by the faculty of the Schools of Engineering to recognize a graduate's contributions to engineering and related fields. Including this
year's honorees, 340 of the more than 60,000 living Purdue engineering alumni have
won the award.
The 1997 recipients are:
- Donald W. Banner, partner with the law firm Banner and Witcoff Ltd., Washington,
D.C.
- Frank C. Becker, Libertyville, Ill., vice president of chemical manufacturing and
research and development for the chemical and agricultural products division, Abbott
Laboratories, North Chicago, Ill.
- Rear Adm. Thomas A. Dames, Honolulu, commander of the Pacific Division of the U.S.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command, and commander of the Third Naval Construction
Brigade (Seabees), Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
- Hichull Kim, chairman and chief executive officer of the Byucksan Group, Seoul, Korea.
- Craig M. McLaughlin, Stamford, Conn., vice president and manager for licensing at
Bechtel Corp., Houston.
- William J. O'Neil, Sierra Madre, Calif., manager of Project Galileo at the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
- Greenwood, Ind.
, native Charles C. "Rocky" Rhodes, Los Altos, Calif., co-founder and chief engineer
at Silicon Graphics Inc., Mountain View, Calif.
- Richard Wayne Skaggs, Distinguished University Professor and the William Neal Reynolds
Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, North Carolina State University,
Raleigh, N.C.
- Dennis W. Sullivan, Willoughby Hills, Ohio, executive vice president for worldwide
industrial and automotive products at Parker Hannifin Corp., Cleveland.
- Dick Teater, Plano, Texas, group president for power and government at Fluor Daniel
Inc., Irving, Texas.
- Indianapolis
native Robert F. Widmer, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., performance and luxury vehicle
line director at Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich.

-- The School of Education has conferred Outstanding Alumnus Awards on four graduates
for 1997.
- Harlan R. Day of West Lafayette
is the recipient of the Career Achievement Award for his work as an economic education
consultant for the Indiana Department of Education.
- William A. Jenkins of Nashville, Tenn., has been presented the Award of Distinction
for innovative leadership in higher education and business administration. He is
a vice chancellor at Vanderbilt University.
- George W. Miller of Medaryville
has won the Community Service Award for his work in agricultural education. The retired
foreign service specialist assisted in the agricultural development of seven countries;
Burma, Germany, Japan, Liberia, North Yemen, the Philippines and Thailand.
- Jill Fuller of Morton Grove, Ill., is the recipient of the Outstanding Young Educator
Award for her work as a fifth-grade teacher at Park View School in Morton Grove.
