Purdue students honored for achievements

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Fifty-seven Purdue University students were recently honored for their achievements.

The School of Liberal Arts has named its Outstanding Senior Award winners. They are Elizabeth Erdman, Eureka, Calif. , outstanding senior in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures; Jason Heuer, Laporte , outstanding senior in the Department of Economics; Robert Johnson, Lafayette, outstanding senior in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts; Erin McCarthy, Flushing, Mich. , outstanding senior in the Department of Communication; R. Christopher Meyer, West Lafayette , outstanding senior in the Department of Philosophy; Jana Torok, Overland Park, Kan. , outstanding senior in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology; Christopher Truelsen, West Lafayette , outstanding senior in the Department of History; Amy Stellmach, Oak Lawn, Ill. , outstanding senior in the Department of English; Gretchen von Harten, Marlboro, N.J. , outstanding senior in the Department of Health, Kinesiology and Leisure Studies; Leah Wasburn, West Lafayette , outstanding senior in the Department of Political Science.
Two students share the School of Liberal Arts Dean's Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Work on Race, Culture or Gender. Both students received a check for $200. The award goes to works representing strategies to overcome barriers or explore concepts of inequality or discrimination. The winners are: Dana Kroos, a sophomore from Minneapolis , for her charcoal drawing titled "Umntwana Wethu Our Child;" and Nikki Hibschman, a senior from Mishawaka , for her paper titled "A Dream Deferred," an account of the effects of Supreme Court decisions on school desegregation.
The School of Consumer and Family Sciences named five Outstanding Seniors: Tamara Grovak, West Lafayette , in the Department of Child Development and Family Studies; Jamalyn Peigh, Terre Haute , in the Department of Foods and Nutrition; Gina Raver, Batesville , in Consumer and Family Sciences Education; Kelly Sullivan, Pittsburgh, Pa. , in the Department of Restaurant, Hotel, Institutional and Tourism Management; and Tara Timpel, Cedarburg, Wis. , in the Department of Foods and Nutrition.
Christopher Corley, Lafayette , and Darryl Dee, Vancouver, B.C. , are winners of the Miletus L. Flaningam Award for excellence in graduate student achievement in history. Each received $250. The annual award is based on papers submitted on significant historical topics.
Richard Garlitz, Huntertown , and Holly Grout, Independence, Ky . were awarded the Henry G. Waltmann Memorial Scholarship as the most deserving undergraduate students in the Department of History. Each received $125. Winners are fifth- or sixth- semester history majors, selected for their overall performance as students, with special attention to their historical studies.
Kappa Omicron Nu, an honor society for students in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences, recently present awards to students. Five students received the Award of Excellence, presented to the top sophomore, junior and senior students based on grade point average. Recipients are Gina Raver, Batesville, a senior majoring in occupational education; Julie Berkemeier, Greensburg , a junior majoring in early childhood education; Laura Bonner, Diamondale, Mich. , a junior majoring in individual and family development; Doris Choy, Hong Kong , a sophomore majoring in restaurant, hotel, institutional and tourism management; and Diane Watkins, Bourbon , a sophomore majoring in retail management. Kappa Omicron Nu also inducted new members They are Julie Avitabile, Waterbury, Conn. ; Stacey Blann, Morocco ; Beth Bourdeau, Lafayette ; Heather Brown, Mulberry ; Sharon Castillo, Sacramento, Calif. ; Christopher Dodd, Evansville ; Karyn Elder, Crawfordsville ; Cammy Harmon, Monticello ; Erin Ice, Greenwood ; Sarah Kelley, Silverton, Ore. ; Pamela Kidd, Wheatfield ; Elizabeth Leax, Indianapolis ; Corinna Lermer, Schorndorf5 Germany ; Emily Merrell, Fortville ; Kelly Sullivan, Pittsburgh, Pa. ; and Xuemei Wang, Hubei Province, China .
Sixteen Purdue students participated in the Fifth Midwest Model European Union Mock Summit. The activity is a simulation of the twice yearly summit meeting of European Union heads of government. Purdue assumed the role of two member countries: Italy and the Netherlands. The team representing Italy took second place. It consisted of Eric Donahue, Fowler ; Mary Gerber, Penfield N.Y. ; George Kim, Manchester, Mo. ; David Larson, Chesterton ; Matthew Phillips, Harrisburg, Pa. ; Elizabeth Poe, Crystal Lake, Ill. ; Seth Shippee, Vincennes ; Mark Steliga, Brookfield, Wis. ; and Kathleen Stotz, Springfield, Va. Best of group awards went to Mary Gerber and Matthew Dickerson, Fairfield, Calif. The Purdue Dutch delegation consisted of Matthew Dickerson; Kenneth Daily, Fishers, Joaquim Do Prado, Recife, Brazil ; Amy Kirschner, Richmond ; Carri Metzger, Indianapolis ; Peter Mokry, Indianapolis ; and Matthew Stubbs, Arlington, Va. The students were sponsored by International Programs; the School of Liberal Arts; Krannert School of Management; and the Departments of Communication, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, and Political Science.
