Purdue rated in science, engineering, management, audiology

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – U.S. News and World Report's annual ranking of graduate school programs recognizes Purdue as among the best in the nation in the sciences, engineering, management, and speech sciences and audiology in a survey released today (Friday, 3/31).

"I am pleased to learn of the high regard in which a number of our graduate programs are viewed," said Robert R. Ringel, executive vice president for academic affairs.

"It is especially noteworthy that Purdue is among a relatively few public universities ranked with Harvard, Yale, Rice, Duke, Princeton, Johns Hopkins and Stanford.

"For a public university such as Purdue to be ranked with the nation's most prestigious private institutions is strong testimony to the quality of our faculty and our students."

In the sciences, Purdue's graduate program in analytical chemistry ranked first in the country, with chemistry overall tying for 18th. In the specialty area of mathematical statistics, Purdue tied with Cornell for seventh place nationally. Computer science rated 17th nationally (a tie with Harvard, Rice and Yale), and mathematics 25th (a tie with Duke, Johns Hopkins, Rice and the University of Washington).

Purdue's graduate engineering programs were ranked third in the country by employers, and they ranked ninth overall. In the rankings of specific specialties, the School of Industrial Engineering ranked third; the School of Aeronautical Engineering ranked sixth; the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Mechanical Engineering each ranked seventh; the School of Nuclear Engineering ranked eighth; and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering ranked ninth.

The Krannert Graduate School of Management was rated 23rd among the nation's 325 accredited master's degree programs in business and management. The magazine also ranks the Krannert School in the top 10 nationally in two specialty areas – third in production/operations management and seventh in quantitative analysis.

Two graduate programs in Purdue's Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences were listed among the nation's top programs. The master's and doctoral degree programs in speech-language pathology rank fourth nationally, and the master's and doctoral degree programs in audiology tied for 13th place.

"While we rejoice in this announcement, we must be careful not to allow complacency to take hold," Ringel said. "Purdue will use the survey results as an incentive and motivation to raise the bar of our own aspirations."

U.S. News and World Report will publish its complete rankings of graduate schools in its April 10 issue, "America's Best Graduate Schools," which will be available on newsstands Monday (4/3). The complete rankings and methodology will also be available at U.S. News Online.

U.S. News has published graduate school rankings annually since 1987.
