Purdue speech, audiology programs rank nationally

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the second consecutive year U.S. News and World Report has ranked two programs in Purdue University's Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences among the best in the country.

The survey released today (Friday, 3/30) ranks the Purdue master's and doctoral degree programs in speech-language pathology tied for fourth nationally, while the master's and doctoral degree programs in audiology tied for 13th.

"Our programs offer outstanding clinical training for future professionals and outstanding research training for scientists," said Anne Smith, professor and department head. "We have a model of complementary training in clinical practice and basic research that has resulted in an exceptionally strong and well-balanced speech-language pathology program. I anticipate our ranking in audiology will be even stronger in the future because we have added new faculty and are in the process of developing a new clinical doctorate in audiology."

Purdue's department of audiology and speech sciences was one of the first in the country to achieve accreditation in both speech pathology and audiology from the Educational Standards Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. There are approximately 30 people on the combined professional staff and academic faculty working with 90 to 100 full-time graduate students and nearly 200 undergraduate students each semester.

The University of Iowa is the top-rated program in speech-language pathology. Indiana University is the only other Indiana college to be ranked, tied with Vanderbilt University for eighth place. Indiana University is ranked ninth with the University of Kansas and the University of Memphis for its audiology program.

The magazine ranked graduate programs in 13 health science fields based on responses to surveys sent to deans, administrators and faculty of accredited graduate programs in health sciences.

U.S. News and World Report will publish its complete rankings of graduate schools in its April 9 issue, "America's Best Graduate Schools," available at newsstands Monday (4/2). The complete rankings and methodology also will be available at U.S. News Online.
