February 27, 2004 Purdue Theatre welcomes master mime artistWEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue Theatre will present master mime artist Daniel Stein in "Windowspeak" on Thursday, March 11, in Stewart Center's Experimental Theatre. The free performance begins at 8 p.m.
Stein comes to the university as Purdue Theatre artist-in-residence, and will present a series of movement workshops for students in acting classes. He is the projects director for Dell-Arte International School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake, Calif. Stein studied at Carnegie-Mellon University, then went to Paris to study with Etienne Decroux, and subsequently made his home in Paris for 20 years. Stein started his professional career as an actor with the French National Theatre. In 1978 he started touring on his own and has since given solo performances in more than 25 countries. He had his own school in Paris for 15 years and has taught master classes throughout the world at institutions such as Juilliard School of Drama in New York and The Institute of Dramatic Arts in Tokyo. Stein has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the United States/Japan Commission, the Pew Charitable Trust and has been named a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow. The "Washington Post" called "Windowspeak" a "funny, wise, and thought-provoking" performance. "Le Quotidient," of Paris, wrote, "In seeing him, one captures the total capability which the body of a man, alone and without tinsel, can express."
