March 5, 2004 Purdue literary journal, public library offer free writing workshopsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Sycamore Review, Purdue's literary magazine, in partnership with the Tippecanoe County Public Library, will host the Looseleaf Writing Workshops again this spring. Three free workshops for adults and teens will take place from 2-3 p.m. on three Sundays from March 21 through April 25 at the downtown Lafayette library, 627 South St. The workshops are "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Prose Poem," with Cody Lumpkin, March 21; "In the Shadows of Giants: Giving Voice to Minor Characters," with Sarah White, April 4; and "The Poem as Architecture," with Sean Conrey, April 25. "These programs are designed for anyone of any level of writing experience," says Conrey, editor-in-chief of the Sycamore Review and a doctoral candidate in rhetoric and composition at Purdue. "If you've never written, but would like to, this is your chance to get started. If you've been writing for years and would like to meet fellow writers and hear a new voice about your work, these programs are for you." Due to its success last year, Looseleaf is being offered for a second year, Conrey says. The organizers are discussing the possibility of expanding the program to high schools and grade schools. "People always report that they have a good time, and that they walk away knowing something that they didn't know before," Conrey says. White, a Purdue master of fine arts student in creative writing, received a bachelor's degree in creative writing and English from Bowling Green State University and a master's in creative writing from Iowa State University. She teaches at Purdue and is a freelance writer. Lumpkin, a master of fine arts student in poetry at Purdue, grew up in the hot, sweaty landscape of Georgia. As time went and the subdivisions started closing in on the forests of his youth, he turned to stories and poetry for solace. Conrey received his master of fine arts in poetry at Purdue. He lives in Lafayette with his wife, Carol. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in "Permafrost," "Cream City Review," "Notre Dame Review" and "Another Chicago Magazine." Registration is required for all workshops. To register, call (765) 429-0119. For information on Looseleaf workshops and Sycamore Review, contact Rebecca Bednarz at rbednarz@purdue.edu.
