Wiley Hall shines spotlight on visual and performing arts

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Student artists and performers will take center stage at a three-day event at Wiley Hall.

The Purdue residence Hall will hold Melting Pot 2005, which begins with three days of student art exhibits and culminates in the Coffee House Showdown, a student talent competition.

"Art is an important part of the lives of a lot of residents," said Robert Ulibarri, a Wiley Hall resident assistant and a junior in the College of Technology. "The idea behind Melting Pot 2005 was to encompass all aspects of art into one big event, displaying and recognizing some of the great artists Purdue has living in its residence halls."

At the Coffee House Showdown, will take place from 8-11 p.m. Friday (3/25) in the Wiley Hall main lobby. Students will be given 15 minutes to perform and demonstrate a variety of talents, including music performances, stand-up comedy and poetry readings. The event will also feature a selection of coffees from around the world.

Students entering the art competition will display visual art ranging from paintings and drawings to sculpture and photography from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today (3/23) through Friday, also in the lobby.

All events are free and open to the public.

Both competitions are open residents in any of Purdue's 15 residence halls. Three winners in each contest will receive prizes including a DVD player, CD player and Purdue apparel.
