Visiting physicist to discuss God, cosmology

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Paul Davies, an internationally known physicist, author and television broadcaster who has written extensively on the origin and mystery of the cosmos, will give a public lecture at Purdue University on Oct. 3 titled "God, the Multiverse and the Goldilocks Enigma."

The lecture, which is part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Department of Physics, will be presented at 8 p.m. in Fowler Hall.

Davies is a visiting professor of physics at Imperial College, London, and professor of natural philosophy at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

Davies has published more than 100 research papers in the fields of cosmology, gravitation and quantum field theory, with an emphasis on black holes and the origin of the universe. He also has written more than 25 books, including "God and the New Physics," "The Cosmic Blueprint," "The Mind of God," "The Last Three Minutes" and "The Fifth Miracle: The Search for the Origin of Life."

He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and has received the Kelvin Medal from the U.K. Institute of Physics. In 1995, he received the prestigious Templeton Prize for progress in religion.

The lecture is part of a series on the interface of science, religion and philosophy that was originally funded by grants from Lilly Endowment Inc. and the John Templeton Foundation, with support from Purdue's College of Science and College of Liberal Arts. This lecture is presently sponsored by the College of Science and the Department of Physics.
