University Residences honored two more times for facility design

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue University dining court and residence hall have each been honored with national design awards, making five design awards that University Residences projects have earned during the past year.

American School and University magazine has recognized the Fred and Mary Ford Dining Court with a Silver Citation for new cafeterias and food-service areas, and renovations to Cary Quadrangle West were named an Outstanding Design among residences halls and lounges.

The awards take into account new construction at schools and universities throughout the country that has been completed since 2003.

Ernest F. Poland, director of University Residences, said the awards recognize Purdue's commitment to providing students with the best possible facilities.

"When University Residences builds new facilities, we are not just designing buildings," he said. "We are building homes for our students. The residence halls and dining courts are not just where they sleep and eat, they are the students' homes.

"We have a responsibility to strive to provide our students with the quality of homes they would choose for themselves."

In recognizing Ford Dining Court, judges emphasized the "use of daylight and detailing (that) turns a large space into intimate dining nooks." The two-story facility, which opened in August 2004, has seating for 800 and is open to students, faculty, staff and the community.

It is part of a $48 million upgrade of Purdue dining services, which also includes completed renovations of dining facilities in Earhart, Hillenbrand and Windsor halls, as well as a planned free-standing dining court adjacent to Wiley Hall.

The Silver Citation makes Ford Dining Court one of the 15 highest-rated facilities by the magazine. It also recognizes Ricca Newmark Design of Denver, Colo., and Scholer Corp. of Lafayette for their work on the design and construction of the new building.

For Cary Quadrangle, the magazine honored renovations to a large lounge, laundry and vending area. The lounge is part of a $55 million renovation that is enlarging rooms and giving a refurbished look to the hall. The renovations will decrease the number of spaces for residents from 1,555 to approximately 1,170, and will add larger double rooms, semi-private bathrooms and air conditioning. Poland said efforts were taken to retain the historical features in the hall – built in 1928 – while equipping it with modern amenities. Also honored with the award were Scholer Corp. and Rowland Design Inc. of Indianapolis.

"It is rare for American School and University magazine to honor two different projects from the same university in the same year," said Timothy Gennett, director of physical facilities for Purdue's Housing and Food Services. This kind of recognition speaks volumes for the firms who have designed and built these facilities and their role in adding to the beauty of Purdue's campus."

In April, Ford Dining Court received an Indiana/Kentucky Golden Trowel Award from the International Masonry Institute. The award recognized the design of the facility's marble terrazzo floor, which delineates serving and dining areas and aids in the flow of people.

In September 2004, Foodservice Consultants Society International and American School and University magazine honored Earhart Hall's new dining court. Both awards recognized the dining court for excellence in interior design.

University Residences is a completely self-supporting unit of the university. All projects are paid for by user fees, bond sales and operational savings, with no funds coming from tuition or state appropriations.
