September 23, 2005 Purdue Board of Trustees re-elects officersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, Sept. 23) re-elected J. Timothy McGinley, an Indianapolis businessman, to a seventh two-year term as board chairman. John D. Hardin Jr., from Danville, Ind., was re-elected as vice chairman. McGinley joined the board in 1989 and was elected as an officer in 1993. Hardin joined the board in 1992 as a Purdue Alumni Association representative and was appointed vice chairman in 2004 to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of W. Wayne Townsend. "Purdue trustees are the foundation of Purdue's success," said President Martin C. Jischke. "It is their vision that has laid the foundation for Purdue's goal of preeminence, from the classroom to the laboratory, from the boardroom to the state economy. Purdue is a leader because of these men and women and their leadership in the development of our university's strategic plan." McGinley, who received a Purdue degree in chemical engineering in 1963 and an MBA from Harvard University in 1965, is the managing partner and principal owner of real estate investment company House Investments. McGinley was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
Hardin owns and manages Hardin Farms. He is past president or past chairman of the National Pork Producers Council, U.S. Meat Export Federation and the Chicago Board of Trade's Agricultural Advisory Committee. He also has served on the Agricultural Advisory Committee for Trade to the U.S. trade representative and to the U.S. secretary of agriculture.
Morgan R. Olsen, Purdue's executive vice president and treasurer, was re-elected treasurer of the board of trustees. The Purdue Alumni Association elected Thomas Spurgeon of Peoria, Ill., in spring to serve as its board representative. Spurgeon is an entrepreneur who has built companies throughout the United States. Most recently, he was president and CEO of Lincoln Office in Peoria, Ill., one of the country's largest distributors of Steelcase furniture. He sold the company in 2001 and remained with Lincoln as a consultant. Spurgeon received a bachelor's degree in industrial management from Purdue in 1961.
Gov. Mitch Daniels re-appointed Mamon M. Powers Jr., and appointed two other members, Rachel Cumberbatch and William S. Oesterle, to the board of trustees. Powers of Gary, Ind., is a 1970 Purdue graduate and president of Powers Construction Co. His company has been recognized in Black Enterprise Magazine as one of the nation's largest African-American businesses in the industrial services category.
Rachel Cumberbatch, a junior in the College of Agriculture from Lebanon, Ind., was appointed to a two-year term as the board's student representative. At Purdue, she has served as an ambassador and mentor for the Department of Animal Sciences, member and then adviser for the President's Leadership Class, and member of the Boiler Volunteer Network.
Oesterle of Indianapolis is CEO of Angie's List, a consumer-advocate service that disseminates ratings based on consumer opinion of local services. Prior to joining Angie's List, Oesterle had been a partner with CID Equity Partners, a Midwest-based venture capital firm. Oesterle earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1992 and graduated from Purdue in 1987 with an honors degree in economics.
The trustees also re-elected the following: • Secretary – Roseanna Behringer. • Assistant treasurer and assistant secretary – James S. Almond, Purdue vice president for business services and assistant treasurer. • Legal counsel – Anthony S.
