October 19, 2005 Purdue presents 'Marisol,' the Experimental Theatre's farewell productionWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Theatre will bring down the final curtain of the Experimental Theatre with José Rivera's "Marisol," Nov. 10-20.
Jeff Casazza, visiting instructor of theater, is directing the production. "Marisol" opens at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 with additional 7:30 p.m. performances Nov. 11-Nov. 12 and Nov. 16-19. Two matinees will be offered at 3 p.m. Nov. 13 and Nov. 20. Admission is $16 for the general public, $12 for seniors (62 and over) and $9 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the Loeb Box Office in Stewart Center or by calling (765) 494-3933 or toll-free at (800) 914-SHOW. Due to adult language, discretion is advised. The play is about Marisol Perez, a young Latino woman who takes an extraordinary journey through the war zone that was once New York City and discovers that the only way to save the earth is for society to rediscover compassion for the human race. Along the way, Marisol crosses blurred boundaries between fantasy and reality, waking and dreaming, and life and death. Director Jeff Casazza describes Rivera's gripping urban drama as a "dark version of the 'Wizard of Oz'" in reference to Marisol's efforts to find her way home after being abandoned by her guardian angel. Marisol's passage is beset by a series of disturbing and distorted events in the style of magical realism. "The play weaves the ordinary with the dreamlike to create its mythic journey of a woman coming to terms with who she is becoming," Casazza said. The doors of the Experimental Theatre will close permanently after the last performance of "Marisol" Nov. 20. Since the theater's inaugural performance, "Northern Lights" in 1958, more than 245 productions have been staged at the theater. Thousands of students in acting, as well as in costume, sound, lighting and scenic design, have trained at the Experimental Theatre during the past 47 years. In 2006, two new theaters will open in the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts.
