Congressman Visclosky speaks at Purdue energy summit
Visclosky, the ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, said that successfully confronting the energy challenges facing our nation is crucial to the nation's domestic and foreign policy objectives. "I am honored to work with Senator Lugar on such an important issue facing Indiana and our nation. By developing our American-made energy sources, we are investing in the long-term economic security of our country," Visclosky said. "Reducing our dependence on foreign oil will also strengthen our national security interests and improve our ability to excel in a highly competitive global marketplace." Lugar agreed. "In charting a strategic energy plan at the summit, we need voices from both sides of the political aisle as well as data, ideas and information from a broad array of public- and private-sector citizens," Lugar said. "I welcome Representative Visclosky's attendance and look forward to working with him." Lugar, who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said when the summit was announced that energy is a national security issue. Purdue President Martin Jischke, who was recently named to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, said Purdue has made energy a major subject of research on a number of different fronts. "Purdue is taking an interdisciplinary approach to finding solutions to the nation's energy challenges," Jischke said. "Our researchers are looking at how to make existing energy sources cleaner and more efficient as well as developing alternative energy sources that will make the nation less dependent upon foreign oil. We also are committed to focusing on the development of national energy policies that position America to be strong and secure in the 21st century."
