Street on campus named after Jischke
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - |
Intramural Drive, located east of Lambert Field and west of Tarkington and Wiley residence halls, has been renamed Martin Jischke Drive. Jischke learned of the recognition Friday (June 8) at a dinner for current and former Purdue board of trustees members who have served with Jischke.
"During his seven years as Purdue's president, Martin Jischke has transformed a great university into a preeminent institution," said J. Timothy McGinley, chairman of the board of trustees. "His vision and leadership have raised the university's profile significantly in eyes of people around the world.
"Martin has had a permanent impact on Purdue, and naming a prominent campus street in his honor will assure that his name will not be forgotten as the years go by."
The signs along Intramural Drive were installed early on June 8 to reflect its new name.
Jischke is the 10th president in the university's 138-year history. He arrived at Purdue in August 2000 and led the university through a strategic plan. Under his leadership, the university has completed the Campaign for Purdue, which has brought in $1.65 billion in private gifts. In implementing the strategic plan, the university undertook more than 50 capital projects, including construction of 40 new buildings.
Jischke has earned numerous honors during the course of his Purdue years. In 2006 he was appointed by President George W. Bush to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. He also received the Centennial Medallion of the American Society for Engineering Education, and in May, he received the International Citizen of the Year Award from the International Center of Indianapolis.
He has served on numerous civic, state and corporate boards and has been a science adviser and consultant to a range of state and federal agencies, corporations and government officials. In the 1970s, he served as a White House fellow and special assistant to the secretary of transportation.
He came to Purdue from Iowa State University, where he had served as its president for nine years. Before that he was chancellor at the University of Missouri-Rolla and had been a faculty member, director, dean and interim president at the University of Oklahoma.
He received his bachelor's degree in physics from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
