The scholarship fund was established in 2003 by Verus L. and Doris A. Miller, of Cambridge City, Ind., in memory of their son Eric Dwayne Miller, who earned a bachelor's degree from Purdue's College of Science in 1992. The scholarship was made possible through a gift to Verus and Doris Miller from an anonymous donor. Eric Miller went on to earn a doctorate in biochemistry from North Carolina State at Raleigh in 1999. He died in 2000. Nelligan of Mount Vernon, Ind., is interested in neurobiology and physiology. She is investigating the molecular organization and function of human red blood cells as part of a research team led by Philip Low, the Ralph C. Corley Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. She is a member of the Purdue University Dance Marathon and has participated on the Purdue women's track and lacrosse teams. She graduated from Bishop Dwenger High School. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduates majoring in biology. Preference is given to Indiana residents from a non-metropolitan area and those who attend a high school with fewer than 800 students in the upper four grades. More information is available online at https://www.science.purdue.edu/current_students/ Miller is remembered by the Purdue community for his intellectual curiosity, work ethic, desire to use his knowledge to improve the quality of life for others and as a friend and colleague, said Bente Fein, director of development for the Department of Biological Sciences. At the time of his death he was engaged in medical research. The scholarships awarded to Alice Foster and Daniel Fox last year have been renewed for a second year.
