October 10, 2007 Purdue Army ROTC cadets to train during upcoming field exerciseWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University Army ROTC cadets will participate in an annual fall field training exercise Friday night through Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12-14) at Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, Ind. The 120 cadets will live in the field and train in areas such as rifle marksmanship, land navigation or orienteering, a field leader's reaction course and a confidence course. The confidence course challenges the cadets physically and mentally, and the leader's reaction course challenges small-unit leaders to develop a team and lead them through a complex task, said Lt. Col. Dan Carpenter, head of the Army ROTC department and professor of military science and leadership. Throughout the weekend, fourth-year cadets will plan and lead all the training under the supervision of the Army ROTC staff. Each semester, the cadets spend a weekend at a field training exercise to practice tasks that cannot take place on campus.
