Eighth-grade veterinarian hopefuls visit Purdue Vet Camp

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Thirty-two eighth-graders participated in the first Boiler Vet Camp sponsored by the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine.

Twenty-seven students from Indiana, two from Ohio, two from California and one from Texas learned about a wide range of veterinary topics - from blood transfusions for animals and horse shoeing to dissection and rabbit anatomy - during the three-day camp. Students also had a chance to present a team medical case investigation and learn about diagnosing animal diseases.

"This is the kind of camp that allows young people who think they might want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine a chance to find out what it is like," said Jim Weisman of the School of Veterinary Medicine. "Faculty members are meeting with the students, and they will learn about veterinary medicine for both small and large animals."

The camp began on June 18 and concluded Saturday (June 21). Students who qualify for the federal free- and reduced-lunch program were eligible for scholarships to attend the camp.

At the conclusion of the camp, students toured the Veterinary Medical Complex and learned about career opportunities for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
