The Purdue University Literary Reading Series is featuring fiction writer Lan Samantha Chang at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Krannert Building's Auditorium.

She also will present a talk on fiction writing at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 30 at the Hicks Undergraduate Library Bookstall. Both events, which are free and open to the public, are sponsored by the Council on Asian American Studies, Department of English, the Creative Writing Program, and Experience Liberal Arts, a monthlong celebration highlighting programs in the College of Liberal Arts.

In addition, the public also is invited to the Council for Asian American Studies reception from 4-5:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 in the Purdue Memorial Union East Faculty Lounge. The reception will be used to introduce Chang and to inform the campus community about the presence of the Council for Asian American Studies.

Chang is the author of "Hunger," a collection of short fiction, and the novel "Inheritance," which won the PEN Beyond Margins award.

"With precision and insight, Lan Samantha Chang's work beautifully depicts the complications of everyday relationships and lives in Asian and immigrant America," said Bich Minh Nguyen, an associate professor of English. "As a writer and as director of the famed Iowa Writers' Workshop, she is truly helping to shape the future of creative writing in America."

Chang is the recipient of fellowships from Stanford University, Princeton University, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. Her work has been selected twice for inclusion in "Best American Short Stories."

She is a native of Appleton, Wis., and the daughter of Chinese immigrants who experienced the Japanese occupation of China during World War II and later immigrated to the United States.

Her work explores the interplay of identity, heritage, gender and culture, Nguyen says.

October's Experience Liberal Arts will feature a variety of lectures, films, performances, events and exhibits that reflect the college's ongoing coursework and research in the arts, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences.
