Prof: Lincoln fought slavery's spread to Latin America, not just West

Robert May, a professor of history who teaches a class on Lincoln and the Civil War, can talk about the life and history of Lincoln, especially his efforts to fight the expansion of slavery outside of the United States. He also explains Lincoln's determination to stop slavery's spread southward in his books about filibustering -- "Manifest Destiny's Underworld: Filibustering in Antebellum America" and "The Southern Dream of a Caribbean Empire: 1854-1861."

Historian: Obama will affect how we remember Lincoln on the 200th anniversary

Caroline E. Janney, an assistant professor of history who studies Civil War memorials and remembrance, can talk about how Lincoln is remembered. She also can discuss how Obama's connections to Lincoln today, will affect how the 16th president continues to be memorialized. Janney is writing about the memory of Lincoln in an upcoming Civil War series that will be published by the University of North Carolina Press to mark the 150th anniversary of the war. She also is author of the book "Burying the Dead but Not the Past: Ladies' Memorial Associations and the Lost Cause."
