Purdue University police are investigating the disappearance of a painting from a first-floor study room in Meredith Hall.

The oil painting is believed to have been removed from the residence hall sometime between Dec. 3 and Monday (Dec. 7), said Purdue police Lt. Fred Davis. The 39-by-54-inch painting, by area artist Phil Best, is in a wooden frame and depicts a town square scene with a church and buildings. Its value has yet to be determined.

The painting is signed and dated 1961 and was a gift to Purdue. It is believed to have hung in the residence hall for at least the last 20 years.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Purdue Police Department at (765) 494-8221 or its anonymous tipline at 765-496-3784. The WeTip anonymous hotline also is available at 1-800-78CRIME (1-800-782-7463).
