WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University Chief Information Officer Gerry McCartney has been named Chief Technology Officer of the Year in the category of “not-for-profit/government” by Indianapolis Business Journal and Techpoint.

McCartney, who also holds the titles of vice president for information technology and Oesterle Professor of Information Technology, received the award Wednesday (Aug. 17) at an event in Indianapolis.

“I am honored to receive this award, and I consider it a reflection of the talented and hard-working IT staff at Purdue,” McCartney said. “We've been able to accomplish quite a bit here over the past several years, and it's nice to see those accomplishments be recognized.”

McCartney became Purdue’s second CIO in 2006. Under McCartney's leadership, Purdue has developed the nation's largest cyberinfrastructure for research, with six supercomputers listed in the internationally known Top 500 list. Also during his tenure, Purdue has developed some of the nation's most advanced learning and classroom technologies, including the mobile apps Forecast and Hotseat.

As Purdue’s system-wide CIO, McCartney is responsible for the management of data and IT resources at the West Lafayette, Calumet, North Central and Fort Wayne campuses. On the West Lafayette campus, areas of responsibility include application services; cyberinfrastructure for research; IT infrastructure; IT security and policy; academic and classroom technologies; IT customer relations and support; and the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness. McCartney reports directly to Purdue President Mitch Daniels.

The award was presented jointly by the Indianapolis Business Journal and Techpoint, an organization that promotes and helps build Indiana’s tech sector.

“This award is especially gratifying because Indiana has a booming and successful tech community,” McCartney said. “To be honored within that community is very rewarding.”
