Katherine L. Sermersheim, Ph.D. Senior Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students

April 3, 2024

Dear Purdue University Students,

What an exciting and historic time to be a Purdue University Boilermaker! As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming NCAA 2024 Final Four/National Championship games, I wanted to write with an important message regarding celebrations and safety. While filled with excitement and anticipation for this momentous event, it is essential that we approach any potential celebrations with responsibility and respect for one another, our campus, and our Greater Lafayette community.

Champions Make Choices and Choices Make Champions!  This slogan not only applies to the hard work, dedication, and talent of our coaching staff and student athletes, but to each of us as well. As we progress to the next exciting stage of this incredible season, please embody the Boilermaker Spirit in the following ways:

  1. Celebrate Responsibly: It is natural to feel excitement and euphoria in the event of a victory, it is essential to celebrate in a manner that is safe and respectful.
  2. Lead by Example. Be a Positive Influence: As Boilermakers, we are ambassadors of Purdue University. Our actions during this celebratory period reflect not only on our individual selves but also on Purdue. Lead by example and demonstrate the values of respect, responsibility, and integrity. Be a positive influence on your peers and contribute to a celebratory atmosphere that is inclusive, respectful, and safe.
  3. Respect Property and Public Spaces: Our campus and surrounding areas are home to all of us, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their preservation and protection.
  4. Look Out for One Another: During celebrations, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of our fellow Boilermakers. While we hope for a triumphant outcome in the game it is essential to remember that celebrations and gatherings should never come at the expense of safety or the well-being of others. In the event of any concerns or emergencies, please call 9-1-1.
  5. Follow Laws, Policies and Guidelines: Laws and rules are in place to ensure the safety and security of our community. In today’s world with surveillance cameras, cell phones, and social media posts, the concept of anonymity for bad behavior is simply non-existent. The consequences can be severe, impacting student status, and tarnishing the reputation of our university.
  6. Stay Informed and Connected: Stay informed about any planned celebratory events or gatherings. Purdue University’s official social media account on X/Twitter is @LifeAtPurdue.

Let us come together as one Purdue family to support our Boilermakers in the NCAA 2024 Final Four/National Championship games while upholding the values that make us proud to be Boilermakers. By celebrating responsibly and respectfully, we can ensure that this momentous occasion is remembered for all the right reasons. Champions Make Choices and Choices Make Champions!

Boiler Up! Hammer Down! Hail Purdue!
