History and Update
Upon returning to the faculty, Academic Administrative Officers with salaries on a fiscal year base will be converted to an academic year base salary (normally a reduction of 20 percent). In addition, administrative supplements, if any, included in the fiscal year salary will be discontinued in order to arrive at the adjusted base faculty salary. This applies to faculty who held tenure as either fiscal year or academic year prior to the appointment as an Academic Administrative Officer.
Academic Administrative Officers with faculty rank and tenure often return to the faculty after serving as Administrative Officers. As Administrative Officers, their salaries are based on duties and responsibilities that are in addition to or in lieu of duties of a faculty member. This Policy formalizes the adjustment that will be made to the salaries of Academic Administrative Officers upon their return to the faculty.
Faculty and administrators of Purdue University are affected.
- Vice Presidents
- Department Heads/Chairs
- Business Managers
This Policy does not cover Academic Administrative Officers who returned to their faculty appointments prior to the original issue date of this Policy: July 1, 2002.

Return to Faculty
When an Academic Administrative Officer with faculty rank and tenure returns to the faculty, the appropriate Supervisor should determine the adjusted faculty salary and notify the Academic Administrative Officer in writing. A copy should be provided to the appropriate Business Manager. The adjusted or academic year salary will be calculated by first removing any administrative supplement and then by applying a factor of 80% to the remaining fiscal year salary.
Exception or Deviation from Policy
Any exception or deviation from the Policy requires approval by the president for all Academic Administrative Officers reporting to the president or to the president?s direct reports; all others require the approval of the provost. The Board of Trustees will approve any exception affecting the president.
