Aleksandra Swatek, from Deblin, Poland, is a PhD student in English. The focus of Aleksandra's studies is writing in a second language: how can we do it well? What makes people good writers? What does it mean to be a good writer, especially in another language?

Why Purdue?

Because of the great faculty in the Second Language Studies program - Tony Silva, April Ginther, Margie Berns, Shelley Staples, Dwight Atkinson. All of these professors are great scholars, and I was looking forward to working with them.

Career goal?

Graduate in 5 years and get a good position where I will be fulfilled.

Favorite fact about Purdue?

It has a clapping circle, but I’m not sure the circle works. Many people believe it does. Amelia Earhart used to coach female pilots here.

Three words that best describe your work?

Fun, engaging, surprising.

If you have free time, how do you choose to spend it?

I spend my time reading books and watching TV, Skyping with my family in Poland.

What apps, software, or tools can’t you live without?

Basecamp, Outlook, Microsoft Word.

What's your workspace setup like?

I either work at home at my desk or in HSSE or Stewart library. English graduate student offices are crowded and have desks that are not adjusted to 21st century work (with a computer).

What's your best time-saving shortcut or life hack?

Teach in the morning - starting the day with teaching is the best way to start the day.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

Basecamp.

What do you listen to while you work?

Spotify - Release Radar, NPR, Polish Radio, My cat meowing.

What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else?

I'm better at doing research, because that is part of my work.

I typically go hiking or watch TV.
