Assessment is defined as "...the systematic process of documenting and using empirical data to refine programs and improve student learning." As such, assessment is integral to effective and inclusive educational excellence in both the curricular and the co-curricular learning realms.
Assessment is purposefully designed into the CILMAR mission. This is because research has repeatedly indicated that, regardless of whether the learning context is study abroad, equity and diversity work, teaching teamwork or supporting international students, it is never enough to simply put individuals of different backgrounds in the same space and expect them to independently figure out how to work appropriately and effectively across differences.
A Purdue-specific adaptation of the AAC&U Intercultural Knowledge and Competence VALUE Rubric serves as our foundational definition of the knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) of intercultural competence. It is one of eleven rubrics approved by the Purdue faculty senate as a valid, inclusive and reliable method by which to assess authentic artifacts of student learning, in support of the desired embedded learning outcomes of the undergraduate core curriculum for all colleges. In addition to the rubric, CILMAR staff support the use of over thirty validated instruments to facilitate evidence-based approaches to intercultural and inclusive learning.
