Hypersonics in combat: Purdue expert explores the impact on national security

Jonathan Poggie, a professor in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University, discusses how hypersonic missiles will factor into the military both now and in the future following Russia’s use of hypersonic missiles against Ukraine.

Purdue combines hypersonic development, testing under one roof

  • The Hypersonics Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center (HAMTC) at Purdue is the only complex to integrate academia and industry from the start of hypersonics materials development and manufacturing.
  • Centralizing design/build/join/test capabilities is expected to shorten the entire hypersonics development process.
  • HAMTC will collaborate with industry partners such as GE Additive, Lockheed Martin and others to work on real industrial defense challenges.

National hypersonic ground test facility to be built in Discovery Park District at Purdue

  • The Hypersonic Ground Test Center (HGTC) provides hypersonic testing streams reaching speeds up to Mach 7.5 – more than 5,000 mph.
  • The center is expected to help the U.S. leapfrog research progress of peer adversaries.
  • Rolls-Royce North America is the first aerospace industry member of a consortium that will manage the HGTC.

Where is the world’s first Mach 8 quiet wind tunnel? Indiana

  • New Hypersonics and Applied Research Facility (HARF) to feature first Mach 8 wind tunnel and a hypersonic pulse (HYPULSE) reflected shock/expansion tunnel.
  • Tunnels allow the re-creation of different real-world scenarios, from a spacecraft’s atmosphere reentry to Mach 5+ missile flight.
  • Construction of the 65,000-square-foot HARF broke ground in late 2021.
