U.S. Department of Commerce announces $450M grant and $500M loan to SK hynix’s AI memory chip facility at Purdue Research Park

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced Tuesday (Aug. 6) that it has agreed to a preliminary memorandum of terms with SK hynix to provide up to $450 million in direct funding, and an additional loan of up to $500 million, to support high-bandwidth-memory (HBM) production and advanced packaging research and development for AI supply chain security in the U.S. The announcement also promises to create more than 800 new jobs in Indiana. This comes on the heels of SK hynix’s April 2024 announcement that it plans to invest close to $4 billion to build an advanced packaging fabrication and R&D facility for AI products in the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette.

First-ever Boiler Gold Rush in Indianapolis to be held next week

Boiler Gold Rush, Purdue’s welcome week orientation program for all new undergraduate students, is also being held in Indianapolis for the first time. Purdue students in Indianapolis take can part in Boiler Gold Rush Indianapolis from Aug. 13-17. Purdue will welcome over 800 new undergraduate students to Purdue University in Indianapolis this fall.

‘This Is Purdue’ — Behind the scenes of ‘Jeopardy!’ with Purdue champion Adriana Harmeyer

Adriana Harmeyer, clinical assistant professor and archivist for university history at Purdue and “Jeopardy!” super-champion joins host Kate Young in this latest episode. In May and June, Harmeyer earned super-champion status after winning 15 consecutive games of “Jeopardy!” As a longtime fan of this Emmy Award-winning game show, she was able to make her “Jeopardy!” dreams come true thanks to plenty of preparation and persistence.

Purdue trustees approve 10-year capital plan, including 2 projects that will go to state lawmakers in upcoming 2025-27 capital request

Purdue University trustees on Friday (Aug. 2) reviewed and approved the university’s 10-year capital plan, an evolving blueprint that will guide the upcoming 2025-27 biennial legislative capital request it submits to the state. The current draft of the 10-year capital plan stems from a collaborative process launched in January among executives, vice presidents, chancellors and Physical Facilities leadership to identify facility needs related to the university’s strategic initiatives and other current planning activities.

AP video: Creating next generation factory-built housing

James Braun, the Herrick Professor of Engineering and director of the Center for High Performance Buildings at Purdue University, explains how factory-built housing can help address the U.S. shortage of affordable housing and the labor needed to produce homes. NextHouse is an initiative at Purdue seeking to develop the next generation of factory-built housing to address this problem. Factory-built housing can lead to lower costs, higher quality and more affordability for consumers. Braun envisions a future in which someone interested in a single-family home could go to a website and customize a house that meets all their needs.
