FAQs for Witnesses

Witnesses to alleged violations of policy are contacted by one of two parties: the student alleged to violate the policy, or a conduct conference officer. As a witness, you will be asked to provide any information you have that directly relates to the alleged student’s involvement in the incident, and you will only be able to participate in a portion of the student conduct proceeding. You may be asked questions by the alleged student, conduct officer(s), and/or panelists (if applicable).

When contacted to participate as a witness, you will be provided the time, date, and location of where to report to for the student conduct proceeding. If it is not possible for a witness to physically be present for a student conduct proceeding, then the witness may participate by:

• Providing a statement of fact in writing before the student conduct conference
• By answering questions during the proceedings via virtual communication platform

If the student asks that you serve as a character witness, you are being asked to write a statement that speaks to who the student is as a person. You are not required to have any direct knowledge of the alleged incident. Character witness statements are considered in the determination of sanctions so conduct officer(s) and/or panelists have a better understanding of the student as a whole person. You must submit your written statement to the OSRR at osrr@purdue.edu prior to the student’s scheduled conduct conference.
