Undergraduate Minor Proposals
This guidance describes the steps required to launch an Undergraduate Minor proposal originating from Purdue West Lafayette for University approvals. Please see Purdue Fort Wayne or Purdue Northwest guidance for proposals originating from these campuses, or reach out to campus contacts.
An Undergraduate Minor proposal provides a secondary area of specialization. Minors are designed for knowledge outside of the student’s primary program, unlike a concentration, which is meant to provide students specialized coursework within their degree. A minor is an internal proposal. Minors do not use a Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) code. Earned minors are noted on student transcripts. Lists of existing minors can be found on the Office of the Registrar Active Curriculum Reports website.
Proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis once they enter the workflow. Time to complete indicates typical completion timeframe from proposal launch to completion in workflow. Some proposals may complete faster, while others may need more time based on when they are launched. Please see Key Planning Considerations below.
New Undergraduate Minor
Time to Complete: 60-90 days
New minors require a full review by the Undergraduate Educational Affairs Council (UEAC). Preview requirements in Curriculog or use this printable checklist.
- Complete home college steps and have approval to advance your proposal by your Department Head.
- Complete the New Minor proposal in Curriculog.
Key Planning Considerations
- The UEAC meets monthly, except in July.
- Proposals need to be on the UEAC step by or before February for inclusion in the next academic year catalog.
Tips
- Prerequisites should be included in the Plan of Study.
- A minor should generally include at least 6 hours at the 30000 or higher level.
- The total number of credits required for the minor includes prerequisites for other courses in the minor beyond foundational courses in the University Core Curriculum.
- A minor can include University Core Curriculum courses from the home department (e.g., a minor in Psychology can include PSY 120).
- The determination of "closely related subject area" is made by reviewing the "required major courses" for the related major. (E.g., The major in statistics includes 42-46 credit hours of required major courses, drawing from courses in math or statistics. Thus, a minor in statistics could draw from math or statistics.)
- A student in a closely related major may not also enroll in the minor.
Existing Undergraduate Minor
Time to Complete: 30 days - suspend or expire only

Key Planning Considerations
- Curricula revisions are only available during the annual Plan of Study update. Revisions must be submitted by or before April 1 for inclusion in the next academic year catalog.
