Tourism Foundations Workshops Commence in the Colca Valley
March 10, 2025
Tourism is an important driver of economic, social, and environmental development for Peru and the Colca Valley in Arequipa is one of the most important national attractions and destinations. The Colca Valley has a few access points that are well promoted, however, the High Route, composed of districts under the poverty line, is an alternative access point which has not been developed extensively yet.
The Nexus project ‘Sustainable Development through Regenerative Tourism: A Pilot Program on the Colca Valley High Route’ (in short ‘Regenerative Tourism’) supports communities from Sibayo, Yanque and Madrigal to co-create sustainable and regenerative tourism practices. During February 11 and 12, team members conducted the first workshops on tourism foundations in Yanque and Sibayo. Twenty-seven people participated in theoretical and practical training sessions that included an introduction to sustainable and regenerative tourism, and business development and entrepreneurship.
Topics for the workshops were identified after a series of town hall meetings among members of the project and Colca Valley tourism stakeholders that were conducted last year. Moreover, the workshops used an interactive approach aimed at generating innovative proposals enriched by the diversity of opinions and experiences. The project is planning to include topics such as marketing and product development skills in its upcoming workshops to provide tourism stakeholders with foundational skills to take their tourism operations to the next level.
