Nexus second Advisory Board meeting: ongoing collaboration with Colca Valley Stakeholders

April 11, 2025

The Arequipa Nexus Institute hold its second Advisory Board meeting on March 20th in the city of Chivay in Arequipa, Peru. The goal of the meeting was to present achievements attained by each of the Phase III Nexus projects in the last 12 months; additionally, the projects outlined their planned activities for the upcoming next six months to receive the critical feedback and support of our collaborators in the Colca Valley.

The event was hosted at the Caylloma Provincial Municipality Auditorium. 18 participants attended the event including leaders from each of our three target communities (Madrigal, Yanque, and Sibayo). UNSA Nexus Codirector and PI of the ‘Organic farming systems’ project, Dennis Macedo kicked off the event with a summary of the attainments of his project highlighting the delivery of comprehensive soil health test reports to farmers to help them in addressing identified challenges and improving their crops’ yield and quality. This was followed by individual presentations by the UNSA PIs of the three other projects (i.e., regenerative tourism, renewable energy, and camelids), and a general discussion around questions and comments from the advisory board.

Remarks from the advisory board included: 1) the need for in-depth training and technical support to help farmers to manage their farms considering more sustainable practices; 2) the need for access/knowledge on alternative energy models to cover households’ energy needs; 3) the need for knowledge on existing tourism resources and capacity building and marketing in the tourism sector in each district; and 4) the need for training on better strategies to manage pastures and camelids.
