Sabbaticals and Leaves

Sabbaticals and other research leaves provide faculty with valuable time to collaborate with other scholars, conduct field research, engage in creative activity, and access specialized resources or facilities that support scholarly work. When these activities involve international travel, foreign collaborations, or access to sensitive research areas, the Research Security and Export Controls team (RSEC) may play a role in reviewing plans to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and institutional policies.

Purdue faculty interested in requesting sabbatical or leave should follow the standard procedures for the leave type. If the request requires RSEC review, it will be routed through the workflow.

RSEC's review may look into research funding sources, insitutions, sponsor restrictions, and any equipment that may be taken by the faculty member. An RSEC team member may reach out to the faculty member directly for additional information or for clarification. Faculty are strongly encouraged to review RSEC's International Travel Page to ensure they stay up to date on best practices.

Researchers who intend to work on Federally-funded projects while on sabbatical or leave while outside the U.S. should determine whether there are any prior approval reporting requirements.
