Intelligence Director Coats sees 'Great Leap' for AI and Warfare

Dan Coats is the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, so his primary concern is the world’s state of war and security as it exists today. Tomorrow’s military and security issues, however, were on his mind during a recent visit to Purdue University. Coats, a former U.S. senator and House of Representatives member from Indiana, appeared on campus May 14 as part of the University’s Dan CoatsSymposium on Ethics, Technology and the Future of War and Security. The day’s events, including Coats’ keynote, focused on the national security challenges posed by rapid advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning and other emerging technologies.

Purdue Peace Project and the Alliance for Peacebuilding recently named the International Storytelling Center as the winner of Purdue’s Peacebuilding Challenge, an event designed to encourage innovative ideas in peacebuilding with the purpose of reducing armed conflict.

Discovery Park’s Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) invites essays/compositions on the topic of ethics, technology and the future of war and security for a Graduate Student Composition Contest in celebration of Purdue’s 150th anniversary Ideas Festival (IF). Submissions are due March 25, 2019; honorees to be awarded at a dinner following the Ethics, Technology and the Future of War and Security Symposium on May 14, 2019.
