What scholarship opportunities exist for nontraditional students at Purdue?
Span Plan has one academic scholarship application to lessen the number of applications that must be completed. Review the Scholarship Opportunities page to learn more about the different funds that will be awarded. Deadline to submit your application is July 1.
Undergraduate students with children should also consider applying for a Span Plan Student Parent Support Scholarship that helps to defray the costs associated with childcare expenses. Deadlines are prior to each term.
How can I tell if I qualify for a Span Plan Academic scholarship?
General eligibility requirements to be considered for a Span Plan Academic scholarship are:
- Nontraditional undergraduate student enrolled at the West Lafayette campus.
- Have a minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA. New students do not need to include a GPA. Returning Purdue students will have their current coursework reviewed and GPA calculated if under the minimum requirement to determine eligibility.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and demonstrate unmet financial need.
- Be enrolled at least 3 credit hours each semester you are receiving the scholarship.
How many scholarships are awarded each year?
The number of scholarships awarded annually varies depending on the number of applicants and the amount budgeted for each year. On average we plan to award 25-35 new scholarships.
What happens in the event that a recipient fails to register for classes or drops out of school?
The award is forfeited by the recipient if the student’s registration status changes.
What if I am not a West Lafayette student or want to transfer to another Purdue campus?
Scholarship funds awarded by Span Plan are specific to students at the West Lafayette campus. Unfortunately, they are not transferable to other campus locations.
I missed the deadline; can I still apply for a grant or scholarship?
Once the deadline has passed, no late applications are accepted.
What if I attend Purdue Global?
Purdue Global students are not eligible for Span Plan scholarship funds.
Can a student attend graduate school and still apply for scholarships?
Span Plan scholarships are only awarded to undergraduate students.
How do I demonstrate financial need?
Need is determined by the Division of Financial Aid via FAFSA OR Estimated Family Contribution (EFC), depending on your residence status. Please submit your FAFSA at least 3 weeks prior to the scholarship deadline as the Division of Financial Aid requires processing time.
Am I required to submit my FAFSA with my application?
A FAFSA must be submitted to the university, but does not need to accompany your application.
What is important to keep in mind as I apply for a Span Plan scholarship?
Span Plan scholarships are competitive – time and thought should be invested when completing your application to ensure you are submitting the best information. Additionally, all applications are thoroughly reviewed to verify eligibility requirements. Your application will not enter the final selection process if the applicant:
- Does not meet the Span Plan student definition;
- Has not completed a FAFSA or if the FAFSA is incomplete;
- Does not demonstrate need or has a full financial aid package due to other scholarship and grant aid;
- Has submitted an incomplete application; or
- Is a student at Purdue campus other than West Lafayette, Indiana
If I work at Purdue, am I still eligible for a Span Plan scholarship?
Yes, Purdue employees are eligible to apply for Span Plan scholarships. If you are a Purdue employee or dependent of a Purdue employee, you must also complete a Form 15 and submit it to the Bursar’s Office in Hovde Hall.
When will a letter be sent to the applicants to state whether they were chosen for a Span Plan scholarship or not?
Students will receive an email prior to the beginning of the fall semester. Please allow for up to 6 weeks after the close of the scholarship for notification. A notice will be put on the website once decisions have been made and a process has closed.

If I want to take classes in the spring, but not in the fall, can I still apply?
The scholarship requires continuous enrollment in the fall and then spring term to maintain eligibility.
What do I need to submit with my application for a Span Plan scholarship?
To be considered, you are required to file a FAFSA about 3 weeks prior to the grant deadline. If you are a Purdue employee or dependent of a Purdue employee you must also complete a Form 15 and submit it to the Bursar’s Office.
What grade point average is required to apply for the Span Plan Academic Scholarship?
Students are required to maintain a 2.25 cumulative GPA.

- Returning Purdue students will have their current coursework completed used to determine grade eligibility if past coursework does not meet the minimum.
