Our community

Even though our faculty members are located in different departments, we work as a cohesive group to share ideas and research techniques.

FLAME (zebraFish LAb MEeting)

Five research groups (Deng, Leung, Suter, Umulis and Zhang) have a joint lab meeting called FLAME. We meet every Friday. Our students take turns to present their research ideas and latest results to their peers. These students receive top-notch training, not only in research, but also in presentation and communication with other people.

The FLAME group also enjoys many activities together:

The FLAME group hiking
We hiked at the Turkey Run State Park.

FLAME group Christmas party
We also have a Christmas party together every year.

Education and Engagement

Our zebrafish labs are heavily involved in education of students and engagement of public.

For example, we actively recruit and involve undergraduate students in our research.

We encourage students to present at professional conferences:

Students at a conference
Students from Leung and Suter labs presenting at the Annual Meeting of the Indiana Academy of Sciences

Students demonstrating research
We also demonstrated our research programs in Purdue Spring Fest to educate the public how zebrafish is used in scientific research.
