Funding Opportunity Description

The Executive Committee of the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research would like to allocate funds to support a Post Doc Career Enhancement Travel Award for Cancer-Related Research.  The goal of this award has been to provide opportunities for a post doc interested presenting their cancer-related research at major professional conferences. The successful proposal will be funded for up to $2,000.

Qualifications/Restrictions

Only post doc applicants of faculty at full member status of the Purdue University Institute for Cancer Research are allowed to apply. Only one application per faculty research group is allowed — no exceptions.

Applicant must be a Trainee Member of the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research.  Membership information and application can be found here.

This announcement does not require cost sharing.

Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards

A minimum of two awards will be avaiable.

The award will not exceed $2,000.  See restrictions.

Award Project Period

The award is intended for attending a professional conference before December 31, 2024.

Award Restrictions

This award is only for post docs presenting at the in-person professional conference.

Award Requirements

Required publication acknowledgement

Posters and subsequent publications containing presented data should include the text, “The authors gratefully acknowledge the Post Doc Travel Award and support from the Purdue University Institute for Cancer Research, P30CA023168.”  The awardee is required to include the cancer institute logo on their presentations and may contact the administrative contact listed above for relevant images. 

General requirement

The applicant must provide prior to submission of the proposal their ORCID for reporting purposes during the electronic application process.  For assistance use the administrative contact listed above.

No Cost Extension (NCE)

No cost extensions are not allowed. If the planned travel or on-line conference or course does not occur before December 31, 2024, the schoalrship will be terminated.

Grant Processing

Reimbursement is processed through the Purdue Travel CONCUR System.  The awardee submits their receipts, poster or PowerPoint from their presentation at the conference, and cancer relevance to the PICR Business Office (cancer@groups.purdue.edu)  and Sara Strasser (sstrasse@purdue.edu). PICR Business Office will provide an account to use in CONCUR for travel reimbursement

Reporting

Responding to periodic requests of career impact is required. Triage of future applications may occur if reporting requests are ignored.

Application Guidelines

  1. Application Length: The application should be single-spaced and a maximum of one page in length (Arial, 11pt) with no less than 0.5-inch margins.
  2. Required Application Structure:
    1. Applicant name, faculty member name and conference/course name.
    2. 300-400 word abstract of the project that will be presented at the professional conference. This abstract should clearly identify hypothesis to be tested and results (known or anticipated) and address significance.
    3. A separate paragraph in which the applicant addresses how this opportunity will enhance career training with an emphasis on relevance to cancer and relevance to future career goals and/or scientific goals. 
  3. For the electronic submission, the items to upload should include (all combined into 1 file):

    1. Faculty mentor letter of support. Once you submit your electronic application, your mentor will receive an automated email asking for this letter and requirements from the Qualifications/Restrictions section above. This letter should include a statement describing the cancer-related nature of the conference will attend. 

Review Criteria

  1. Cancer-relevance of the project
  2. Impact the award will have on the development of the post doc. This can include the productivity/accomplishments of the post doc.
  3. Selection committee could consist of senior/program leaders, PICR members or other experts.
