New Book: "Exposed: The Hidden History of the Pelvic Exam"

The pelvic exam. If you’ve ever had one, you’re probably already wincing. It might be considered a routine medical procedure, but for most of us, it is anything from unpleasant to traumatic.

In Exposed, noted historian Wendy Kline uncovers the procedure’s fascinating―and often disturbing―history. From gynecological research on enslaved women’s bodies to nonconsensual practice on anesthetized patients, the pelvic exam as we know it today carries the burden of its sordid past. Its story is one of pain and pleasure, life-saving discoveries and heartbreaking encounters, questionable procedures and triumphant breakthroughs.  Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, along with interviews with patients, providers, and activists, Kline traces key moments and movements in gynecological history, from the surgeons of the nineteenth century to the OB/GYNs of today.

This powerful book reminds us that the pelvic exam is has never been “just” a medical procedure, and that we can no longer afford to let the pelvic exam remain unexamined.

Celebrate Purdue Women's History

Screen-Shot-org.pngAuthor Angie Klink seeks funding to publish her manuscript Purdue’s Female Founders: The Untold History. The book reveals for the first time in one volume the fortitude and achievements of the twentieth-century foremothers of Purdue University. This engaging book is a collection of profiles on female faculty who shaped Purdue University from its beginning in the late 1800s through the twentieth century.

Read about Purdue women who pioneered teaching and research; established departments, schools, and colleges; and blazed paths where only men trod. Compelling stories in this 350 to 450-page book celebrate women in art, science, nutrition, literature, nursing, speech, engineering, fashion design and textiles, home economics, family life, psychology, agriculture, health and kinesiology, management, and more. Purdue’s Female Founders covers 125 years of Purdue history told through the female lens. Click to see more details of the book.

If you'd like to support the publication of this book, please click here to give! The goal is to raise publication costs of $40,000.

Women's Global Health Institute

The health of women and girls is of particular concern as a result of gender-related biological differences, socioeconomic status, and disparities in research involving women participants. At Purdue University, we deliver solutions through research and training that address these challenges, both nationally and internationally, through our work at the Women’s Global Health Institute (WGHI). The institute combines strong technology, engineering, natural and social sciences, and is a hub for interdisciplinary research.

The institute aspires to deliver meaningful solutions to the challenges in women’s health by securing partnerships and support for research and training from government, private foundations, and corporate companies.

Our Women's Health Research Grant Program supports outstanding researchers in women's health. Here are the recent awardees.
