Recreational Fire Guidelines and Procedures
Registered student organizations (RSOs) may aspire to have traditional or spirit events that include the utilization of fire. RSOs are permitted to have a recreational fire, which is completely enclosed in a commercially manufactured portable outdoor fireplace appliance.
Below are guidelines and procedures for recreational fires that are part of an event on the West Lafayette campus.
-
Fire Prevention shall be notified at 765-494-0966 at least 48 hours in advance between the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
-
An event planning form should be submitted online to Boilerlink at least two weeks prior to the event date.
-
Fuel for the fire should be clean, untreated wood. The fire shall not be ignited with flammable liquids.
-
A commercially manufactured portable outdoor fireplace appliance shall be used.
-
The portable outdoor fireplace appliance shall have a screen, which controls the emission of ash and embers.
-
The portable outdoor fireplace appliance shall not be operated within 25 feet of a structure or combustible materials.
-
The fire shall be constantly attended, and shall be extinguished when not attended. Furthermore, the fire should be extinguished with a garden hose or bucket of water. Smoldering embers shall not be disposed of in a dumpster.
-
The fire shall not constitute a nuisance (e.g. excessive smoke, odors).
-
All instructions from the manufacturer of the portable outdoor fireplace appliance shall be followed.
-
No open burning shall occur if—by the discretion of a University official—said burning represents a danger to the public health, safety or welfare of present individuals.
