Purdue Research by the Numbers
With one of the most diversified and well-balanced research portfolios in the country, Purdue Research achieved a record high level of external research funding, $647M, during FY24, a 6% INCREASE compared to fiscal year 2023.
Record level of funding
In FY24, our external research funding reached a record high level with a well-diversified base of funders. Research awards from external sources reached $647M (up 6% from FY22) – an increase of 102% since FY13.
Broad base of external funding
Funding from our largest source of external support, the U.S. federal government, now exceeds two-thirds (69%) of our overall external funding. Meanwhile, industry and nonprofit organizations contributed nearly $142 million in funding to support Purdue research. Unlike many others research universities – Purdue’s funding is not dependent on a single federal agency. Instead, a majority of federal funding comes from five federal bodies – Department of Defense (19%), National Science Foundation (16%), Health and Human Services (15%), Department of Agriculture (6%), and Department of Energy (6%).
Bridging academia and industry
Purdue has long collaborated with private sector partners by establishing master research agreements (MRAs) that lead to practical and meaningful research to address key needs. Since 2012, the number of meaningful MRAs with companies has accelerated dramatically with productivity totaling more than $257M across fields.

Purdue’s Next Moves
Some of the momentum in our research enterprise are due in part to strategic investments made by Purdue through the Purdue Moves and Purdue’s Next Moves initiatives. Through these, we continue to refine our organizational structure to optimally leverage Purdue’s unique strengths, maximize research efficiencies, and develop interdisciplinary solutions that truly matter.
