Student Pay & Job Levels
Student positions should be assigned an appropriate job level based on the job responsibilities and experience required. Employing departments should pay student employees according to the student pay scale between the minimum and maximum rates for the designated level. It is recommended that departments periodically review their job levels and rates of pay for all student employees to ensure internal equity.
Student employees who are enrolled at Purdue University and meet the credit requirement do not pay FICA tax. Student employees not attending Purdue University pay FICA tax. Graduate and undergraduate students may be employed or continue to be employed as students during the summer period. FICA tax, however, will be withheld if the student is not enrolled in classes at Purdue.
Overtime Pay
Students who work in excess of 40 hours weekly are eligible for overtime pay. Hours worked include all Purdue positions and overtime pay is charged to the account for the position worked when overtime status took effect.
Merit Pay
Student employees may be eligible for merit pay increases based on department specifications. Increases should be fair, consistent, and based on the employees work performance and contributions. Supervisors awarding a merit pay increase should also complete a formal performance evaluation with the student.
Federal Work-Study
All student positions qualify as Federal Work-Study eligible positions. Consult with the Division of Financial Aid for policies and procedures to employ work-study eligible students.
