General Employment Policies
Work Hours
It is not recommended that students exceed 20 hours/week so that school work, extracurricular activities and studying are not overloaded. Typically students work 8-12 hours per week. Overall, hours depend on the department's needs and the student's availability. Departments should be flexible with the student's class schedule. Students who work more than 40 hours/week are eligible for overtime.
Recognition & Awards
Managers can show appreciation or recognition to student employees in a variety of ways. This can include certificates of achievement, tangible items, monetary gifts, etc. New and existing recognition programs must adhere to the policy on Gifts, Gratuities, and Recognition (III.B.5) and carried out following the operating procedures set forth by the policy.
Nepotism
Student employees are subject to Purdue’s nepotism policy.
No person is permitted to be employed by or continue employment with Purdue University in any position that places him/her under the Administrative Supervision of another employee to whom he/she has a Personal Relationship. An exception to this policy may only be granted in the event the employment of an individual under the above circumstances would be for the benefit of the University or serve a useful purpose consistent with the mission of the University (see Responsibilities section for approval authority).
